Robert Altman got the most for his money when he got John Williams to score his 1973 neo-noir The Long Goodbye. Altman's musical conceit - that a song should follow protagonist Phillip Marlowe everywhere he goes, in various musical guises - exploited Williams' versatility in a way that is both breathtaking and entertaining. In this episode, West plays just a few of the numerous arrangements John Williams created for the song "The Long Goodbye". Artists include Johnny Mercer, John Williams, Henry Mancini, The Dave Grusin Trio and Jack Sheldon.
